Sermon Title: The Invitation of Discipleship

Sermon Text: Matthew 11:25-30

Sermon Purpose: To call the hearer to accept Jesus invitation to discipleship.

Sermon Proposition: There are 4 instructions tied to Jesus invitation of discipleship.

I.          The invitation includes a command to the spiritually blind. V.25-27

            A.        People are blind to God’s truth.

2 Corinthians 4:4 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.

Ephesians 4:18 having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart;

            B.        People are blind to God’s will.

Colossians 1:25 of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God which was given to me for you, to fulfill the word of God, 26 the mystery which has been hidden from ages and from generations, but now has been revealed to His saints. 27 To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

            C.        People are blind to God’s Messiah.

Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. 18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. 19 For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell,

Hebrews 1:1 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; 3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

II.        The invitation includes a command to come. V.28

            A.        Come to experience the rest of salvation in Jesus. V.28a

                        Romans 4:22 And therefore "it was accounted to him for righteousness."

Romans 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

Isaiah 1:18 " Come now, and let us reason together," Says the LORD, "Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.

            B.        Come to experience the rest of sanctification in Jesus. V.28b

Isaiah 55:1 "Ho! Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk Without money and without price.

Revelation 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let him who hears say, "Come!" And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.

III.       The invitation includes a command to take. V.29a
IV.       The invitation includes a command to learn. V.29b-30

            A.        Learn how to live and labor under Jesus’ leadership.

            B.        Learn how to live and labor under Jesus’ direction.

            C.        Learn how to live and labor under Jesus’ care.

1 John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. 4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world -- our faith. 5 Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
